Carpet
Carpet is the largest part of what we do, and it is the material people most often buy badly. The showroom sample that feels wonderful under your hand is not the one that survives a hallway for ten years. We would rather spend twenty minutes explaining density, twist and pad than sell you something that mats down by the second winter.
Density and twist, not how it feels in the showroom
Almost every disappointing carpet was chosen by touch. A deep, soft plush feels luxurious under your palm in a showroom and then flattens into shiny traffic lanes down the hallway within a couple of years. The properties that predict how a carpet will look in year eight are density — how tightly the fiber is packed into the backing — and twist, which is how tightly each strand is spun and heat-set. Neither is something you notice by stroking a sample.
The quick test we show people in the showroom is to bend a sample back on itself. If the backing grins through easily, the fiber is sparse and it will crush. Then look at the individual yarn ends: tight, well-defined twists hold their shape, while loose ones blossom open and start to look worn long before they have actually worn out.
None of this means you have to buy the most expensive carpet on the floor. It means matching the construction to the room. A bedroom that gets bare feet and little traffic can be softer and looser than a hallway that takes the whole household every day, and spending the difference where it will actually be walked on is how a carpet budget should be split.

The rooms carpet still wins, and the ones it does not
Bedrooms are carpet's strongest case and always will be. It is warm on a cold Willamette Valley morning, it is quiet, and it is forgiving underfoot in a room where nobody is tracking in rain. Stairs are the second: carpet is safer than a hard surface on a run of treads, and it takes the noise out of a busy house.
Living rooms are a genuine choice rather than a default. If the room opens off an entry and the traffic comes in straight from outside, we will usually steer you toward luxury vinyl plank in the walking path and carpet in the parts of the house that sit behind it. If the living room is further in and used for sitting rather than passing through, carpet is still a lovely answer.
Where we will talk you out of it is entries, kitchens, bathrooms and laundries. Newberg gets close to forty inches of rain a year, and all of it walks in on shoes. Carpet at a doorway is a filter that you cannot change — it holds the water and the grit, and it is the first square meter of the house to look tired.

Power-stretched, because kicked-in carpet comes back
Carpet is stretched, not laid. Done properly it goes down over fresh tack strip and correctly specified pad, and it is power-stretched across the room so the backing is under even tension in both directions. Done quickly, it is pushed into place with a knee kicker alone, which feels tight on the day and then relaxes into ripples across the middle of the room a year or two later.
That difference is invisible at handover, which is exactly why it is worth asking about. It is also the reason we carry a ten year labor warranty on our work: if the installation is right, it stays flat, and we are comfortable standing behind it. The manufacturer's warranty covers the material separately.
The pad matters more than most people expect. It is not packaging — it carries the carpet's recovery, its acoustics and a good share of its lifespan, and an under-specified pad will shorten the life of an expensive carpet. We spec it to the carpet and to the room rather than defaulting to whatever is on the truck.
We do carpet re-stretches as well, for floors that were not stretched properly the first time. It is honest work and we are happy to do it, though it is not something we chase — most of our week is new carpet, measured, ordered and installed by the same people who quoted it.

Carpet questions
How long does a carpet installation take?
Most houses are a single day, and a couple of bedrooms is a morning. The bigger variable is the material: carpet is ordered in for your job, so the lead time between signing the quote and the install day is usually a week or two rather than the install itself being slow. We give you both dates up front.
Do you move the furniture?
Yes, for normal household furniture. We ask that you clear the small and breakable things — lamps, electronics, the contents of wardrobes and closets — and we handle beds, sofas and dressers. If there is a piano or something similar, tell us at the estimate so we can plan for it rather than meet it on the day.
What is the difference between carpet grades?
Mostly density and fiber. A higher grade generally means more fiber packed into the same area and a tighter twist, which is what resists crushing in the traffic lanes. Color and softness are choices; density is durability. We will show you the difference on samples side by side rather than asking you to trust a number on a label.
Can you re-stretch carpet that has gone wavy?
Yes. Ripples usually mean the carpet was kicked in rather than power-stretched, and it can generally be lifted, re-stretched and re-trimmed without replacing it. We do take that work on. It is worth saying plainly that re-stretching is not our main business, so if you are weighing a re-stretch against a replacement we will give you an honest read on which is the better use of your money.
